But every so often, prominent public figures come to Georgetown, and undergraduates glean the rare opportunity to ask questions in return. Last Wednesday, those who attended Associate Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor’s lecture received an index card where they could write one question for Sotomayor to answer during the standard post-lecture question-and-answer session — a Gaston Hall standard that usually fosters a candid discussion and enriches university programming. In Wednesday’s case, however, the questions were screened and posed by a university official, rather than the student or event attendee who originally wanted an answer. (WUSA9) -- A twenty-year-old man was fatally struck by a car in Laurel early Wednesday morning, Howard County police said. The accident happened in the 9700 block of Washington Boulevard around 6:24 a.m. Police said a Toyota Camry was going northbound on Washington Boulevard close to Country Meadows Lane when it hit the 22-year-old man in the road. He was pronounced dead at the Laurel Regional Hospital. The 47-year-old driver was not hurt, police said. According to authorities the cause of the crash is still being investigated. Northbound Washington Boulevard remains closed at Whiskey Bottom Rd. and southbound Washington Boulevard remains closed at Maier Rd. Like this story? (WUSA9) -- A Laurel man has been arrested and is being charged in connection with two armed robberies that both happened in just over two hours on Monday, police said. Khali Ahmad Campbell, 20, was taken into custody and is facing numerous charges, Laurel police said. Campbell went into the Pasta Plus located at 209 Gorman Avenue at 5:15 p.m. with a handgun and demanded money. Campbell then fled on foot, according to authorities. Nobody was hurt during the incident. Campbell then went to the Holiday Inn Express at 14402 Laurel Place around 7:23 p.m. Officers responded to the hotel and spotted the suspect at the corner of Laurel Place and Cherry Lane. Police stopped the man without any issues and took him into custody. Police found cash and a black bb gun. (WUSA9) -- A woman was struck and killed by a vehicle in Laurel, Md. Friday morning, according to officials with the City of Laurel. The incident happened around 6 a.m. at Rt. 197 at Cherry Lane, officials said. The driver involved in the accident stayed at the scene. The victim has been identified as 19-year-old Helene Nagassa. Her family has been notified. Police say the 66-year-old driver stayed on the scene and was very cooperative. Witnesses told police that the driver had a green light and that Nagaasa was not using the crosswalk. The accident is still under investigation. No charges have been filed in the case. Route 197 was closed for about three hours. (WUSA9) -- A fire broke out Friday night at the former site of the Forest Haven mental health facility in Laurel. An Anne Arundel County fire spokesperson said the fire broke out at the vacant building at 8400 River Road at around 10:10 p.m. The Forest Haven facility, which was officially known as the D.C. Children's Center, was an asylum for children and adults with intellectual disabilities. The facility was closed in 1991. Fire officials are continuing to investigate the cause of the fire.
